This document describes Microscale's decal set for Central of Georgia Railway 40' and 50' steel box cars built between 1937 and 1963. HO scale 87-1079; N scale 60-1079. Introduction This decal sheet is designed to provide accurate lettering for steel box cars in the Central of Georgia's standard paint scheme. In 1937 the Central of Georgia dressed up its standard box car paint scheme by adding a white monogram to both car sides. The monogram was located above the dimensional data, on the opposite end of the car from the reporting marks. Two shop stencils, number 114 and slightly more narrow number 122, were used to apply the monogram. This paint scheme remained standard for the next seventeen years. Then, in 1954 the Central added company slogan "The Right Way" to the standard box car paint scheme. This slogan was painted white in stylized script. It was positioned just above the reporting marks. In December of that year cars 6208 - 6211 became the first standard scheme cars to be delivered with both the monogram and the new "The Right Way" slogan. Central management was pleased with the new scheme, although they did make one modification. Deciding that the monogram was being upstaged by the slogan they increased the size of the monogram (stencil 144). Generally the slogan was 12' 9" in width, but several variations can be observed on box car photographs made during the nine years between the introduction of the slogan and the Southern merger in 1963. Central box cars covered in this decal set were all painted in varying shades of Boxcar Red paint. The modeler is advised to consult photographs whenever possible. Steel Box Car Roster The roster below gives car lengths and door types from the manufacturers that supplied the Central's boxcar fleet. Cars in the number 300-636 series were originally built during World War II as composite side cars and were rebuilt at Columbus, Georgia starting in 1959. Cars in the 2000-2369 series were rebuilt by Greenville Steel Car Company from older 40' CG box cars starting in 1963. Listings in the table represent the cars after rebuilding. | | Numbers | Built | Length | Door | Maker | Monogram | Slogan | | | 4000-4499 | 1937 | 40' | 6' | P/S | Small | No | | | 6000-6099 | 1941 | 40' | 6' | P/S | Small | No | | | 6500-6599 | 1941 | 40' | 1½ | P/S | Small | No | | | 5100-5249 | 1942 | 50' | 1½ | ACF | Small | No | | | 6100-6149 | 1942 | 40' | 6' | P/S | Small | No | | | 5250-5499 | 1944 | 50' | 1½ | ACF | Small | No | | | 6300-6499 | 1944 | 40' | 1½ | ACF | Small | No | | | 4500-4749 | 1945 | 40' | 6' | P/S | Small | No | | | 6600-6999 | 1945 | 40' | 1½ | P/S | Small | No | | | 7300-8299 | 1953 | 40' | 8' | P/S | Small | No | | | 6208-6211 | 1954 | 40' | 6' | P/S | Small | Yes | | | 6212 | 1955 | 40' | 8' | P/S | Large | Yes | | | 6213-6214 | 1956 | 40' | 8' | P/S | Large | Yes | | | 6215-6216 | 1957 | 40' | 8' | P/S | Large | Yes | | | 8300-8799 | 1957 | 40' | 8' | P/S | Large | Yes | | | 300-302 | 1959 | 40' | 6' | CG | Large | Yes | | | 303-304 | 1960 | 40' | 6' | CG | Large | Yes | | | 310-404 | 1960 | 40' | 8' | CG | Large | Yes | | | 405-636 | 1960 | 40' | 8' | CG | Large | Yes | | | 2000-2369 | 1963 | 50' | 9' | GSC | Large | Yes | Notes: - Door - Size in feet or 1½ indicates door and a half
